Subject: Quetiapine
I am under seroquel or quetiapine for 200 mg now. What are the advantages and disadvantages in treating my bipolar type 2 disorder? I still have mood swings and I often wake up late at 10 plus in the morning. What should I do?
Answer from DepNet
Hi,
Quetiapine belongs to a class of medication called Atypical Antipsychotics. It is used to treat symptoms of bipolar disorder including episodes of mania (abnormally excited or irritable mood) or depression (depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities).
Quetiapine can cause the side effect of drowsiness in some people, especially in the beginning of treatment and after a dose increase. If your Quetiapine dose is prescribed to be taken at night, you can try taking the night dose in the earlier part of evening (around 7-8pm). If the problem of waking up late in the morning persists, and is affecting your daily activities, you should discuss it with your doctor.
The effect of the Quetiapine is usually seen at least 1 to 2 weeks after taking the medication or after any dose adjustment. It is important to take your medication regularly as prescribed by your doctor. If your condition does not improve, you should inform your psychiatrist.
