Subject: Somatisation Disorder
hi,
i had a sharp, poking chest pain felt yesterday for a total of 29 times for the whole day! Actually, i had other pains felt on my body since year 2003, such as tooth pain, head pain, bright zigzag line seen on my eye but disappeared when i closed my eyes for a minute out of the blue! And most of the time, no anxiety present nor i feel nervous when the pain comes! The pain just come any minute even when i'm not nervous!
Is it the unexplained symptoms call somatisation?
Read about somatisation on depnet, but not in details much!
I had anxiety, depression and subclinical hypothyroidism. Now on sulpiride(400mg) and Faverin (50MG), just started this 2 doses last tuesday and started on thyroxine(50MCG) since last friday.
I haven't confirm this with my psychiatrist or therapist yet whether do i had somatisation, but looks like it is.
How can anxiety or stress turns to pain felt by the body?
what causes it? or lack of anything, like hormones, or neurotransmitters, dopamine etc???
Other than taking SSRIS and having CBT, what other things to do to improve on the unexplained pain symptoms?
Answer from DepNet
It would be prudent to consult your psychiatrist about these symptoms you have been experiencing. While somatoform disorders are commonly co-morbid in people with depression or anxiety disorders, it is important for a medical practitioner to do a full evaluation (full history, physical examination and possibly investigations) to exclude other medical conditions before labelling this as a somatoform disorder.
The relationship between psychiatric and physical conditions is complex, often one may trigger the other or make an exisiting condition more pronounced. Sometimes when psychic distress cannot to channelled into psychological symptoms, physical manifestations may then be produced insead.
Do consult your doctor since these symtptoms seem to troubling you quite a bit.
Take good care
