SSRIs

These can be very effective in treating anxiety disorders, particularly for those patients who are also suffering from depression, as both conditions can be helped by the same medication. These drugs have in common important effects on the serotonin neurotransmission system, which is involved in mediating a number of important functions including mood, aggression and pain.

SSRIs are highly effective across the range of anxiety disorders and depression. They have been studied intensively and are generally regarded as first-line treatment of anxiety and mood disorders.  They have been shown to improve sleep, lift mood and improve overall quality of life. They seem to achieve this by boosting the effect of the signalling substance serotonin in the brain. Commonly used SSRIs that you may be prescribed include:

  • citalopram
  • escitalopram
  • fluvoxamine
  • fluoxetine
  • paroxetine
  • sertraline

You may experience side-effects whilst under treatment with SSRIs. Not all SSRIs are the same and some cause more side effects than others. These may include:

  • restlessness
  • difficulty in sleeping
  • nausea and vomiting
  • headache
  • constipation
  • tendency to sweat
  • sexual problems (lack of desire, delayed/absent ejaculation)
  • weight increase

Side effects can vary from one person to another but you should consult your doctor if necessary. When stopped abruptly certain SSRIs can produce a discontinuation syndrome characterised by dizziness, insomnia and flu-like symptoms, so in general it is best to discontinue gradually.
