Community psychiatry

Community psychiatric help is available in Singapore. Community psychiatry is a supplement to psychiatric treatment. The aim of this collaboration is to help the individual in theri recovery process when they are in the community.

Practical help

Community psychiatric help can consist of home support. This means that a regular contact person will give you practical help with your daily chores such as:

  • cleaning
  • shopping
  • laundry
  • finances
  • social contact

The contact person will also offer you social contact to break the isolation which accompanies a mental illness such as depression. The contact person will visit you regularly at your home and also offer you suggestion where you can take part in activities outside your home.

Your contact person can also give you advice and guidance in connection with contact with public authorities, social services in Singapore.

Day centre

Do you want to be with other people? You are welcome at the day centres in your area. There, you will be able to take part in a variety of activities such as excursions, vocational training, social skills training and education.

Home support services

There are home support services if you need more support before you can live in your own home. These home support services can include flat and house shares and other similar initiatives, giving you the chance to spend time with other people and get personal support.

Bukit Gombak Group Homes provides sheltered housing to stabilised psychiatric outpatients in gainful employment who are homeless or unable to live with their families.

The aim is to help residents gain an increasing sense of independence and control of their lives, and to move on to independent living in the community.

 

Relatives, friends and neighbours

Community psychiatrists can also give guidance and advice on the mentally ill person's network in relation to how they can help. Many organisations allow relatives to take part in groups. In these groups, relatives get help and support from other people in the same situation.
