hi, i read on a book on multiple sclerosis recently and found that if one had MS, one may get depression, why is this linked to MS?
I had depression since year 2003, recently this few months, i was seeing a neurologist and my neurologist suspect i had MS after my mri scan of my brain shown a white spot on my left side of brain.
and from physical examinations shown my right side of body is weaker. And the evoked potential tests and blood tests i took turn out normal.
Just saw my psychiatrist, she told me to wait and see first after consulting my neurologist as my symptoms will appear and disappear suddenly cos it doesn't last long.
And also i had subclinical hypothyroidism, am on thyroxine 50mcg, for depression is faverin 150mg.
Hi,
Depression is seen in more than 50% of patients with MS, especially when first diagnosed, or when MS becomes progressively disabling. The depression can be due to a reaction to the realization that MS is progressively disabling illness, or to the loss of functions, as part of the nerve damage of MS illness itself, sometimes due to the effects of treatment medications for MS, or it can occur entirely on its own apart from MS.
Symptoms of MS and Depression also often overlap as well as affect the progression of each other. Therefore an early referral for a psychiatric review is necessary.
The neurologist and psychiatrist as well as the physician treating the subclinical hypothyroidism should work together and be aware of the overall treatment and progress. This can be done in a general hospital with all 3 services available.
A psychologist can help reduced negative thinking, mood control, building a positive outlook and emotional resilience in depression and also any medical condition too.
Take care.
