Subject: Hashimoto's encephalopathy

The question was submitted 08 March 2009

hi, my neurologist said i had possible hashimoto's encephalopathy, but which type not sure yet. But i will be getting IV steriod treatment in one more week's time at a hospital, will be warded there.

will be getting methylprednisolone for the treatment.
i was previously given 20mg prednisolone taken for 2 weeks in january 2009, but my symptoms seems to get worse in mid feb 2009. i asked my neurologist is the 20mg prednisolone dosage too low, he said maybe.

so what are the side effects of methylprednisolone in high dosages, other than feel more confused, weight gain?

As my symptoms are more to head, face numbness, stroke like deterioration and feeling tired and also mood swings and tend to cry easily when provoked by people i don't like and felt frustrated for no reason nowadays.

I'm taking 150mg faverin, 20mcg thyroxine and xanax when necessary.

So will the above medication i'm taking currently affect my IV steriod treatment, do i need to take faverin if my possible hashimoto's encephalopathy is treated?

Hi, sorry to hear about your condition that needs you to be hospitalized for treatment next week.

Methylprednisolone is a steriod similar to the prednisolone that you have taken previously, used in treating supressing the overactive immune system and inflammatory conditions associated with autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto's encephlopathy like what you have been suspected of suffering from by your neurologist. It is normally administered by intraveneous route through your veins into your body. Its heartening to note that you would be closely monitored during the course of IV treatment in the hospital. So, do let your doctor know if you experience anything unusual after the IV treatment. Possible side effects regardless of the dose of methylprednisolone include sleeplessness, weight gain, increased susceptibility to infections, increased glucose levels in the blood, possible swelling of the limbs. Please do not be disheartened by the side effects as they may NOT occur to everyone on this medication, and do let your doctor know if you are concerned or experience any of these side effects.

Your current medication regime is unlikely to interfere with you IV steriod therapy. I suggest you talk to your psychiatrist about the need to contiinue with your faverin even after your encephalopathy is adequately treated, as your psychiatrist would be the best person to decide how long you need to take your faverin before it would be wise to discontinue should your mood symptoms abate with treatment of your condition.

My heart goes out to you, and i wish you a successful recovery and management for your medical condition.

Take Care & Best Regards.
